PROJECT OUTLINE:
Smart Materials Y8

Project Outline
The students produce a display using thermochromic film. It is designed
as a short project which is mainly to help students grasp the concept
of modern materials and smart materials. As well as the standard tasks
this project includes: modern materials theory with questions and smart
materials theory with questions. You can add basic electronic theory to
this project. There are blank pages for you to add your own touch.
Resources and Practical
Tips (per student)
Graphics room with craft materials e.g. craft knives/scalpels, scissors
colouring felts etc. This project requires a vacuum former.
Materials- a piece of thermochromic sheet (25mm x 35mm).
A piece of card (100mm x 125mm)
A 240mm length of Nicrome wire.
A 9v alkaline battery for students to test their products.
A block of wood for each student to colour like a battery (45x25x15mm).
Or foam core for them to make mock batteries.
10 blocks of wood for vacuum forming over (47x27x20mm)
