a photo holder based on an Egyptian/Art Deco theme. It covers the whole
design process including: use of WWW to research Art Deco shape &
detail, measurement task (different photo sizes), orthographic drawing
task, oblique and isometric drawing task, joint cutting experiment task,
step-by-step Flow chart, wood joints, and a finishing woods page.
Resources &
Practical Tips
Resources- Woodworking tools, paint, felts or dies, black
thick and thin marker pens to outline colours and neaten up work.
Materials-
frame supports: strips of pine (100 x 25 x 15mm) with 5mm grooves cut
in. Note-If you cannot facilitate making the groove then make the supports
thicker e.g. 20mm and fix quadrant beading either side of a 5mm strip
of material. This will allow for the 3mm acrylic, photo and card backing.
Base- Pine pieces (190 x 60 x 10 or 12mm) If you want to save on material
you could make them 45mm wide but this makes the base a little slim and
not easy to stabilise.
Acrylic- 150 x 100 x 3mm cut card backing the same size
Add-ons- for extra bits, which decorate the frame, have a box full of
small off-cuts. Also use other materials such as high density polystyrene.
This is easy to cut for the less able and makes very colourful work (glue
with DCM liquid glue using an old paint brush). I find that the best work
comes from allowing the students to take them home as they are not restricted
to classroom time constraints or distractions. They often come back with
additional sequins and Fimo sculpture work!
