PROJECT OUTLINE:
Display Boxes Y10
(Resistant
Materials).

Project Outline
This project aims to teach students about various wood joints: however,
the display itself can be completely open to the student's own creativity.
The display can use narrative to tell a story or simply contain some beautiful
objects. This flexibility means that both boys and girls are free to be
as creative as they please.
Resources &
Practical Tips
Resources- Woodworking tools and bench vices, large G-clamps,
small pieces of material to use as spacers for gluing up, small self tapping
screws for backing board (10mm. Make sure they are thin or they will split
the wood. Less able children could just glue the back on and trip to fit).
They will also need mallets and try squares to assist in getting right
angles when gluing up. For the display and finish of the boxes have a
selection of stains and coloured card available.
Gluing up is
quite tricky for many students. Get them to do it in pairs if possible
and emphasise the important of covering all contactable surfaces but not
to put too much on. Also reiterate the importance of not putting the spacers
over a joint area when clamping it all together.
When doing the
back panel I find it helps if the glued box is places over it and the
inside drawn around. This way the backboard display can be done well without
the inconvenience of being inhibited by the inside walls.
Materials-
lengths of pine for the box which are 45mm wide, 12mm thick and 180mm
long (they need to be 150 squares when finished so they fit the vice.
The size given is to allow for mistakes and rubbing down). If the material
can be thicker it works well because it is less likely to split when screwing
or nailing. However, if you choose a thicker material, allow more length
for the extra thicknesses.
Hardboard for
the back 160 square (can be trimmed to fit). Depending on the desired
outcome and what skills you wish to add to the project, square acrylic
can be used for the front to the same measurements.
For the display
its a good idea to get them to collect images which they can stick
onto thin MDF or plywood which can then be cut around (cutting around
images really helps to elevates quality)
